No deal for Sharper in Jax

S Darren Sharper left Jacksonville on Thursday without a deal. The Saints free agent was reportedly linked to interest from the Dallas Cowboys but ESPN reported Thursday that they have no interest in the 35 year old safety.

Sharper was an integral part of the Saints defense last season on the way to winning the Super Bowl. His age didn’t play a role in his performance on the field as he intercepted 9 passes, returning 3 for touchdowns, had 15 passes defended, and logged 71 tackles.

Even though New Orleans drafted FSU CB Patrick Robinson at the end of the first round, Sharper could and should return for another season with the Saints.

Uh oh, Brees is on the cover of Madden 2011

It was announced today that Drew Brees will adorn the cover of the Madden 2011 NFL video game. Bad news for Saints fans. And that news might be enough to change some betting odds in Vegas. But, betting on football isn’t really a serious thing, it’s all for entertainment purposes anyway.

Generally everyone who has appeared on the cover of the popular video game since 2000 has suffered some sort of injury.

Daunte Culpepper tossed 23 interceptions in 2002. Marshall Faulk never was the same running back performance wise after appearing on the cover in 2003. Mike Vick broke his leg in 2004 after appearing on the cover.

Ray Lewis had his worst season ever in 2005. 2006 saw Donovan McNabb on the cover, he tore his ACL and suffered a sports hernia. Seattle Seahawks and NFL MVP RB Shaun Alexander suffered a foot injury and simply fizzeled away from the football world after his appearence on the Madden cover.

In 2008, Titans QB Vince Young graced the cover and missed the season with a knee injury. 2009, Brett Favre was on the cover and didn’t miss any games but did have shoulder surgery after the season to torn biceps muscle.

Steelers safety Troy Polamalu was on the cover with Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald sprained his MCL and missed several games, while Polamalu injured his PCL and missed several games as well.

So Saints fans, I wish I had better news, but be prepared for some sort of contingency plan.

Former Buccaneer DE Jimmy Wilkerson is now a New Orleans Saint. Wilkerson had a career year last season with the Buccaneers before being lost for the year with an ACL injury.

There is a strong possibility that he might miss the start of the season while rehabbing his injury. Wilkerson is a versatile defensive line player and will most likely split time with the recently signed DE Alex Brown. Wilkerson reportedly signed for a 2 million dollar contract for the 2010 NFL season.
