In a move which outlines just how involved the New Orleans Saints are with the community, the team is raffling off an actual Super Bowl ring. The team announced this week that so far they have raised almost $500,000.00 with the raffle. The proceeds from this raffle are going to the oil ravaged communities in the region to help victims of the oil spill which resulted after the explosion on the Deepwater Horizon rig.

You can purchase a ticket for 2.00 each, but there is a 10.00 minimum. You can purchase tickets up until 11:00am local time on September 9th. You do not need to be present to win. You can enter the raffle by going here.

This is perhaps one of the classiest moves I’ve ever seen an NFL franchise undertake. There has always been a strong bond with the community and the team but this is very cool on behalf of the Saints organization. And to think just a few years ago there was speculation that Tom Benson might have moved the team.

New Orleans Saints head coach consumed his fair share of booze after winning the Super Bowl. Let’s hope the hangover is gone by the time the season starts in September.

Writer Mark Lorado has finished reading coach Payton’s new book, Home Team” and concluded his top 10 most memorable lines from it. The article is a great read, starting with Payton’s line “I was seven Bud Lights in” as he goes on to describe the Saints Super Bowl Parade. There was plenty of alcohol consumed along the way according to Payton.

New Orleans Saints fans now have a book on their summer reading list, head coach Sean Payton’s new book, Home Team. Payton joined WWL radio to talk about his book and the state of the Saints. You can listen to the interview here.

Payton and the Saints have really bonded with the community and spoke about his experiences in the region. Payton said, “We’ve had four great years here and a lot of that gets back to the people. Having been in New York fpr 9/11 and then coming here after Katrina, we’ve seen what the human spirit can deal with and how they can deal with it.”

The region now has another tragedy to deal with in the form of millions of gallons of oil washing ashore.

Saints part ways with McCray

In somewhat of a surprising move, the New Orleans Saints released veteran DE Bobby McCray on Monday.

McCray told WWL-TV’s Scott Cody, “I’m speechless.” McCray was a force on the defensive line for the Saints last season and really stepped up his game during the Saints Super Bowl run in the playoffs. McCray’s salary would have totaled 3.25 million in 2010.

During the offseason, the Saints acquired DE’s Alex Brown and Jimmy Wilkerson to improve depth so the move to release McCray does come as somewhat of a shcok. The Saints management has offered no comment as to the move.

The 6 year vet recorded 7.5 sacks and 59 tackles during his time with the Saints.
